CUSTODIAL WORKER

TITLE #: 1201 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves responsibility for the performance of routine building cleaning and occasional minor maintenance tasks. Cleaning tasks are performed according to well-defined procedures and maintenance tasks are performed under direct supervision or according to specific instructions. Supervision is received from a custodian or other superior. Supervision of the work of others is not a responsibility of employees of this class. Does related work as required. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

  • Cleans restrooms, replenishes usable items; 

  • Sweeps and mops floors and stairs, vacuums, rugs; waxes and buff floors; 

  • Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment;

  • Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures;

  • Polishes furniture and metal furnishings; 

  • Empties waste baskets; collects and disposes of rubbish; 

  • Cleans snow and ice from walks; sand and salt walks and driveways; 

  • May mow lawns, trim shrubs, rake leaves and perform a variety of other groundskeeping tasks as assigned; 

  • Assists in the operation of an oil or gas-fired low-pressure heating system, including checking the boiler for temperature and pressure; 

  • Delivers packages and messages; carries or transports using hand trucks; 

  • Unloads and stores supplies and materials from vehicles; 

  • Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use in buildings or large floor areas; 

  • Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs; 

  • Paints rooms and equipment and assists in doing minor plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs; 

  • May make tours of buildings and grounds for security checks and possible malfunctioning of facilities; report any unusual conditions and facilities not functioning properly. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; willingness to perform routine cleaning and other manual tasks; ability to get along well with others; thoroughness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

AS PER CONTRACT
Substitute Teacher Aide

Substitute Teacher Aide:  Performs work during the absence of regular classroom support staff.   Work is performed under the direct supervision of a certified teacher, administrator, or a senior official in accordance with well-established procedures. Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

  • Works with small groups of children reviewing repetitive classwork; 

  • Corrects papers and records grades under direction of a teacher; 

  • Accompanies and supervises students in other school activities such as assembly programs, field trips, playgrounds, cafeteria, etc.; 

  • Assists with arrangements and preparations for science demonstrations, music and art classes, audiovisual presentations, etc.; 

  • Proctors and assists in the administration of various tests; 

  • Performs a variety of clerical work related to teaching activities, such as typing, copying, filing and distributing information, preparing teaching aids, keeping classroom records and attendance, etc.; 

  • May assist in crisis intervention and assist in classroom management as directed by the teacher; 

  • May assist children with disabilities to maintain a normal school routine, including, but not limited to, bus arrivals and departures, cafeteria help, toileting, emergency exit during evacuation drills, lifting, carrying when needed;

  • May arrange parent conferences under direction of teacher; 

  • May relieve classroom teachers for emergencies and meetings as needed; 

  • May perform food service, school monitor or custodial/cleaner duties on a substitute basis.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 

Working knowledge of classroom routine; ability to establish and maintain good relationships with students, teachers and others within the school; ability to understand and follow oral and written communications; ability to maintain discipline; clerical aptitude; resourcefulness; tact; courtesy; good judgement; neat personal appearance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. 

 

$15.00/hr
