Job Description

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

The Greenwood Lake School District is seeking a knowledgeable, dynamic, child-centered administrator to be our next elementary school principal. This excellent PreK - 3rd grade leadership opportunity requires a passion for serving our ~200 students, collaboration with a strong faculty, and teamwork with colleague administrators. GWLUFSD proudly promotes enhanced programs and services in order to improve student learning and address the needs of the whole child. The successful candidate will have demonstrated teaching and leadership experience, as well as outstanding references. NYS certification as a building administrator is required. The final candidate will be offered a regionally competitive salary and benefit package, in alignment with the Greenwood Lake Administrators Association Contract.

  • Demonstrated success in teaching and leadership

PRINCIPAL 

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION: To provide instructional leadership for the grade levels and over the facility for which he/she is responsible; including educational leadership in carrying out Greenwood Lake UFSD policies as they relate to the health, education and welfare of all level students in attendance.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools

SUPERVISES: All personnel assigned to the school, including teachers, clerical staff, custodians, teacher assistants, aides and any other employees.

JOB GOAL: To use leadership, supervisory and administrative skills so as to promote the educational development of each student and the professional skill development of each staff member.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plans - Organizes, prepares, projects, anticipates, implements the following:

Is responsible for the planning, organization, and direct implementation of all school activities, such as:   

  1. Budgeting school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.

  2. Leading in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program.

  3. Overseeing the plans for and supervision of bus, fire and other emergency drills or situations.

  4. When required, preparing and administering the school instructional budget and supervising school finances.

  5. Assisting in the planning of the building or program security and making appropriate recommendations when necessary.

  6. Planning, scheduling and conducting meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.

  1. Manages - Supervises and/or is responsible for the day-to-day tasks and/or operation of the following:

Assumes responsibility for the administration of the school in such areas as:

  1. Establishing and maintaining a safe and effective learning climate in the school.

  2. Assuming responsibility for the safety and administration of the school facility where such a facility and its maintenance personnel are under his/her control.

  3. Responsibility for the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and non-academic purposes for one’s own program.

  4. Interpreting and enforcing district policies and administrative regulations.

  5. Delegating authority to appropriate personnel who can assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.

  6. Establishing guidelines and maintaining high standards for proper student conduct; maintaining and enforcing discipline as necessary, according to due process to the rights of students.

  7. Establishing guidelines and monitoring attendance, conduct and health of students.

  8. Overseeing the various local funds generated by student activities.

  9. Assigning duties and making special assignments for staff as needed.

  10. Serving as a member of committees and attending meetings as directed by the superintendent or designee.

  11. Serving as an ex-officio member of all committees and councils within his/her school.

  12. Providing for the dissemination of information directly or indirectly to parents, school districts, public agencies and other interested parties and in accordance with the direction of the Superintendent, district policies, and administrative regulations.

  13. Carries out all duties in accordance with Greenwood Lakes UFSD policies, regulations and practices and follows the established guidelines of the Employee Handbook.

  1. Interacts - Communicates, organizes and implements communication, meets, with the following constituents and/or District Personnel as described:

Promotes communication in such areas as:

  1. Keeping his/her supervisor informed of events and activities of an unusual nature.

  2. Participating in principals’ meetings and such other meetings as are required or appropriate.

  3. Maintaining active relationships with students and parents.

  4. Exercises discretion and judgment when communicating with supervisors, colleagues, staff, parents, students, and members of the community, to avoid disclosure of confidential or sensitive information (i.e.; facts; or presumed facts that relate to; employee or student information, personnel matters, investigations, negotiation or details) that may impede district operations.

  1. Evaluates - Performs evaluation of systems, practices and or personnel, to ensure efficient effective use of district resources, as described:

Evaluates program operations in such areas as:

  1. Recommending the selection or hiring of school building personnel.

  2. Conducting ongoing and annual supervision and evaluation of all professional, paraprofessional, administrative and non-professional personnel attached to the school.

  3. Maintaining responsibility for the development, revision and evaluation of the curriculum within the building.

  1. Professional Development - Participates in and continues to develop skills in the areas of:

    1. Overseeing and directly participating in the orientation of newly assigned staff members and assisting in their development as appropriate.

    2. Assisting in the in-service orientation and training of teachers and other staff members.

    3. Performing such other tasks and assuming such other responsibilities as the Superintendent or his/her designee may assign from time to time.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month year; salary and benefits as established by the Board.

EVALUATION: At least annually by the Superintendent

LOCATIONS WHERE WORK MAY BE PERFORMED: On-site or remotely with prior approval.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Examples: Able to lift 25lbs, able to perform CPI, able to safely supervise students.

 

Job Qualifications

CERTIFICATION/CLASSIFICATION/QUALIFICATION Valid New York State Certification as School Building Leader (SBL), or School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS).
